Étude: Momentum is a high-energy technical study designed to develop control, precision, and expressive command at faster tempos. Built around a driving pulse, this étude places extreme emphasis on dynamics, pushing the performer to explore bold contrasts, from whisper-soft pianissimo to fortissimo, often in rapid succession. Every dynamic marking should be intentionally exaggerated, shaping the line with clarity and intensity.
Rhythmic accuracy is essential. Triplet figures must be practiced with a metronome to ensure absolute consistency and clean internal subdivision. The momentum of the piece depends on unwavering rhythmic integrity, even as the music surges forward.
A clearly defined ritardando provides a moment of release and control, do not rush through it. Allow the tempo to relax naturally while maintaining tone quality and dynamic shape.
This étude should be approached progressively. Begin at a slower tempo to master finger coordination, articulation, phrasing, and dynamic control. Gradually increase speed only after full technical and musical accuracy is achieved, eventually bringing the piece to its intended tempo of ♩ = 130.
With its technical demands, dramatic dynamic range, and rhythmic precision, Étude: Momentum is excellent preparation material for your next Honor Band audition, helping performers build confidence, control, and musical presence under pressure.

Many of these études are available for multiple instruments. If your instrument isn’t shown, email me and I’ll gladly arrange a custom version tailored to your needs.
